FAQ

Yes, we welcome students of all genders and identities, including LGBTQIA+.

We currently have up to 40 students across our two campuses.

Average enrollment at NeuroDev is 12 months. However, the length of time can vary based on individual needs.

The day starts at 8:30 am with “Connect,” a time for everyone to come together and kick off the day. The rest of the morning is dedicated to physical wellness at the gym and a life skills class. Lunch, prepared by mentors, is served at 11:30 am.

From 12:30-3:30 pm is flex time, providing an opportunity for individualized mentoring tailored to each student’s needs. During this time, students might work on tech certifications, focus on college coursework, or receive coaching in other areas.

After 3:30 pm, the remainder of the evening is free time. Mentors work with students to plan fun and engaging experiences for the evenings. The NeuroDev common space closes at 10 pm during the week and 12 am on weekends.

NeuroDev follows a typical college schedule, including regular breaks throughout the year (fall, winter, spring, and early and late summer breaks). During breaks, students can choose to go home, have family visit, or stay on campus. Mentors are always available and plan experiences for students who remain on campus during these times.

At NeuroDev, we foster a supportive and inclusive environment where everyone feels safe and respected. While we have clear expectations for behavior, our focus is on positive reinforcement and skill development rather than rigid rules.

Here are some of our key community guidelines:

  1. Respect for Self and Others: We value kindness, empathy, and understanding in all interactions.
  2. Active Participation: We encourage students to engage fully in the NeuroDev experience, including attending scheduled activities and classes.
  3. Technology Use: To promote social connection and well-being, we ask students to use technology primarily in designated areas on campus, and not in dorm rooms (except for smartphones).
  4. Substance-Free Living: We maintain a substance-free environment to support students’ health and focus.

We understand that each student is unique, and we work collaboratively with individuals to address any challenges that may arise. Our goal is to create a positive and empowering community where everyone can thrive.

What is the housing arrangement like? Can students have their own room, can students bring a pet, and is there staff available 24/7?

Students share rooms with a roommate to practice valuable social skills.

While personal pets aren’t allowed, students can take turns caring for NeuroDev’s emotional support dog.

Mentors don’t live on-site, but Directors of Student Development are on call 24/7 for emergencies.

NeuroDev’s global tuition covers:

  • Parent supports

We do not accept insurance because we are not a treatment facility.  We are a specialized tech and mentoring school.

NeuroDev’s global tuition does not cover:

  • tuition for colleges or technical schools
  • personal expenses like clothing or personal hygiene supplies
  • travel to and from home
  • medical expenses

While medical expenses are not included and we don’t accept insurance, we do help students find and access suitable medical and psychological services through trusted providers we work with closely.

Are students required to manage their own medications?

Yes, students are encouraged to self-manage their medications. This is an important life skill, and our mentors are here to provide support and guidance as needed.

We understand that executive functioning challenges can sometimes make medication management difficult. In those cases, we offer additional assistance to help students develop effective strategies.

Yes, students take an assessment during their first week and review the results with a Director of Student Development. This helps guide students toward paths that fit their strengths and interests.

Many students have difficulties with screen time/gaming overuse. We focus on building a sense of belonging and providing mentoring support, which often naturally reduces screen dependency. To discourage isolation, we don’t allow computers, Wi-Fi, or TVs in student housing. These are available on our campuses, where students are encouraged to gather.

How do you handle it if a student has trouble getting up in the morning?

If a student struggles to get up, we work closely with them to understand the root cause and find solutions. This might involve temporarily pausing their phone service if it’s a distraction at night.

What happens when a student is ready for more independence?

Many students transition to our independent housing when they’re successfully managing college, tech school, and/or a job while still benefiting from mentoring. Others may move back home or feel prepared to live independently.

Our students come from diverse backgrounds and locations across the country.

We don’t endorse any religion but support each student’s individual beliefs.

Generally cars make great vehicles for developing independence. In some cases, they can be used to stay stuck and escape experiences of developmental growth. Students should discuss bringing a car with a campus Executive Director. NeuroDev provides transportation for activities and errands.

We don’t accept students who are unwilling to participate in mentoring, have severe intellectual disabilities, or aren’t ready for a supported college-living experience. Safety is paramount, so we don’t accept students who are violent, sexually inappropriate, actively using illegal drugs, or pose a threat to others.

We encourage healthy independence while recognizing the importance of family involvement. We hold bi-weekly calls with parents/supporters, send monthly newsletters with updates and photos, and offer access to a dedicated online platform NDM Circle (included in the global tuition) for parents and grandparents of NeuroDev students. We keep the lines of communication open for crises or other needs.

For some students, transitioning back home after completing the NeuroDev program is the best path forward. We collaborate with these students and their families to craft a personalized transition plan that anticipates their needs.

For most NeuroDev students, continued support after graduation is key to a successful transition. Students who are successfully attending college and/or maintaining employment are often strong candidates for our Independent Living Support program. This program serves as a bridge between the structured NeuroDev environment and full independence, offering:

  • Continued Support: Ongoing, personalized mentoring to navigate the complexities of independent living.
  • Skill Development: A supportive environment to practice and refine independent living skills, with guidance and resources readily available.
  • Community Connection: Continued camaraderie with peers, easing the transition and providing valuable social support.
  • Affordable Living: Housing and basic food included in the monthly tuition, tailored to individual needs and typically around $2,500 per month for six to 18 months on average.
